A PLANNED 2800-lot residential subdivision at Cooranbong will be the first estate in the Hunter to have recycled water available on tap to water gardens and flush toilets.

The board of Hunter Water is today expected to approve the new scheme, which is the first major initiative of its type to stem from the utility's recently completed recycled water strategy.

Under the scheme, recycled water will be delivered through a third pipe to all properties in the North Cooranbong estate planned by the Johnson Property Group.

The pipes will draw recycled water from a treatment plant earmarked for Dora Creek.

Each house in the estate will have two meters: one regular meter to measure the amount of town water used at the premises, and a second to feed recycled water into toilets and taps for outdoor gardens and lawns.

Each property will also have a pipe to take waste water to the treatment plant.

Johnson Property Group will pick up 75 per cent of the $16.7 million bill for the plant.
